What's the difference between fairy lights and string lights?
What are Fairy Lights?
Fairy lights are decorative lights that typically feature small bulbs on thin, flexible wire. They radiate a warm glow that’s perfect for subtle, ambient lighting instead of bright illumination. Fairy lights are usually battery-powered, making them highly versatile and flexible for installs virtually anywhere. Fairy Lights are not considered as much as a lighting application rather than a decoration element, since they are not very bright (compared to the String Lights).
What Are String Lights?
String lights are decorative lights with bulbs attached to insulated wiring. String lights consist of a wide variety of lights, from mini lights to curtain lights, and even fairy lights. While fairy lights are a type of string light, not all string lights are fairy lights. Traditional string lights use larger bulbs that are placed on the string with more space between each other.
Where to decor with fairy lights?
1. The Bedroom
· The Headboard Glow: Wrap lights around a metal bed frame or drape them in
"swags" across a wooden headboard. This creates a soft reading light.
· Ceiling Canopy: String lights across the ceiling to mimic a starry sky. If you have
a four-poster bed, drape them over sheer white fabric for a "cloud"
effect.
·
Fairy Light Curtains: Hang several strands vertically behind a window sheer or a blank
wall to create a glowing backdrop.
2. Living & Common Areas
· The "Faux"
Fireplace: If you have a fireplace you don’t use,
pile up some logs and nestle a bunch of fairy lights between them. It gives the
warmth of a fire without the heat.
· Frame a Mirror or Art: Wrap lights around a floor-length mirror. Not only does it look
pretty, but the mirror reflects the light, making the whole room feel brighter.
·
Banisters & Shelves: Weave lights through your staircase banister or tuck them along the
back of bookshelves to make your decor pieces "pop."
3. Table & Accent Lighting
· "Fireflies in a
Jar": Take an empty mason jar, wine bottle, or
glass vase and stuff a battery-operated strand inside. These make great
centerpieces or nightlights.
· Photo Wall: String a line of lights horizontally across a wall and use tiny
wooden clothespins to clip Polaroid photos or postcards to the wire.
4. Outdoor Decoration Ideas
· Tree Wraps: Instead of just draping them, wrap fairy lights tightly around the
trunk and lower branches of a tree to create a "sculptural" look.
· Path & Fence Lighting: Use solar-powered fairy lights to outline a garden path or drape
them along the top of a wooden fence to define the edge of your yard.
· Umbrella or Pergola: If you have a patio umbrella, string the lights along the ribs of
the underside. For a pergola, weave them through the overhead beams.
Common Uses for String Lights
Our decorative string lights usually have 10 lanterns, these lights are perfect for smaller, more focused areas. They work best as accent lighting to add a cozy, bohemian touch.
